A Florida State University law professor who grew up in Toronto was fatally shot at his Tallahassee home Friday morning.

Daniel Markel, 42, was shot at around 11 a.m. at a residence on Trescott Drive, according to the Tallahassee Police Department.

Police say Markel was rushed to hospital with a gunshot wound but later died of his injuries.

“I am deeply saddened to report that our colleague Dan Markel passed away early this morning,” FSU Law School Dean Donald Weidner said in a statement.

Markel, who was a Harvard graduate and criminal law professor at FSU, has been described as a "dedicated family man" with two young sons.

"He would give up any minute to be with them and when he was travelling to a conference, he made sure to always Skype with them,” Markel's friend Orly Lobel told CTV News.

“I'm just devastated to think about them right now."

Colleagues, friends and family mourned the loss of the slain professor at a memorial service Tallahassee on Sunday and funeral arrangements are expected to be made by his family in Toronto.

Police say the shooting is being treated as a homicide investigation and so far, no suspects have been identified.
