Homicide detectives are taking over the investigation into a death in the city’s Dovercourt Village neighbourhood overnight after determining that it was the result of an assault, police say.

According to Det. Leslie Dunkley, paramedics were first dispatched to the area for a medical call at around 12:45 a.m. He said that a 36-year-old woman was transported to hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police were then notified about the incident due to the nature of the injuries, Dunkley said. He said that investigators now believe the woman was the victim of an assault.

Police are currently going door-to-door in the area in search of witnesses and surveillance footage.

Dunkley said that officers are also still in the process of identifying the deceased and notifying her next-of-kin.

No information has been released about possible suspect at this time.
