Two Mount Sinai staff members "inappropriately" accessed Toronto Mayor Rob Ford's health record, a statement released by the hospital Thursday afternoon confirmed.

"We became aware of this activity through a robust system of safeguards and auditing procedures designed to ensure compliance to our security and privacy policies," the statement reads.

"We immediately investigated and appropriate action has been taken, as per our strict code of conduct and privacy policies. As per legislative requirements, the patient was notified of the situation."

The names of the employees were not provided in the release.

"We sincerely regret that these privacy breaches occurred," the statement adds. "Privacy for all of our patients is paramount and we will continue to be diligent in upholding our privacy policies and practices."

Ford has been receiving treatment for a rare and aggressive form of cancer at the hospital since Sept. 11.
