Hydro crews are still working to restore power to homes across Toronto today after strong wind gusts knocked out electricity across the Greater Toronto Area and the province on Friday.

At the height of the wind storm, about 8,000 customers in The Annex, Leaside, Yorkville, and Etobicoke, just south of Highway 401, were without power.

On Saturday morning, Toronto Hydro confirmed that the number of customers without power had dropped to about 130 as of 7:30 p.m.

Thousands of homes in in other areas of the GTA, including Pickering, were also without power on Friday.

"We made good progress overnight and we are going to continue to work until every last customer is restored,"  Cristina Basil, a spokesperson with Toronto Hydro told CP24.

"We are dealing with a high volume of events and extensive damage to our system. Crews are still having to pull tree limbs away from our sites before we can even begin to make restoration, so it is very lengthy and difficult to provide individual restoration times."

The windy weather was associated with a cold front that arrived in the GTA on Friday evening.

Police believe at least one collision, which occurred on Highway 401 near Dixie Road, was caused by the high winds on Friday.

Basil reminded Toronto residents to stay away from downed power lines.

"You need to continue to treat them as live. Please stay well away, at least 10 metres, which is about the length of a school bus," she said. "Safety is really our top priority at this time."
