LONDON, Ont. -- Fire officials in London, Ont., say an early-morning fire forced 10 international students from their home, but only caused minor injuries.

Acting deputy fire chief Jack Burt says the fire broke out before 7 a.m. Thursday in a home located above a convenience store and shared by 10 international students studying at Fanshawe College.

He says a smoke alarm alerted the students to the blaze and gave them time to escape, which some did by jumping out a second-story window.

Burt says one student and one firefighter sustained minor injuries.

He says the fire caused hundreds of thousands of damage to the building and also spread to a neighbouring home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
