A young man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries and another is in custody following a stabbing in Scarborough’s West Hill area.

It happened inside a residence on Manse Road, north of Lawrence Avenue East, just after 7:30 p.m.

Police said the victim was located with a stab wound to the abdominal area. He was rushed to a hospital trauma centre with life-threatening injuries, Toronto Paramedic Services said.

Police later said that he was undergoing surgery for a “very serious” injury.

A 19-year-old suspect fled the scene, but was apprehended by the K9 unit a short distance away after area residents helped track him.

“We were able to maintain a perimeter with the assistance of the public, who were calling in because he was hopping fences and in people’s backyards,” Duty Inspector Stacey Davis told CP24 at the scene. “With the assistance of the public we were able to narrow down the search and eventually we were able to take him into custody.”

Davis said the suspect and victim “were known to each another.”

“They did live in the same residence together.  There’s no relationship between the two,” she said.

The stabbing occurred just down the street from where a gang prevention town hall was being held at a community centre in the wake of a teenager’s shooting death on Monday.
