A man believed to be in his 50s has been transported to a trauma centre after an industrial accident at a construction site in Etobicoke on Monday.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. near the area of Duncairn and Glen Agar drives.

Toronto police said that scaffolding collapsed at a construction site in the area. A worker fell and became trapped under debris, police said.

Police said that coworkers tried to clear the area and remove debris from above their trapped colleague as they waited for first responders.

The male victim sustained life-threatening injuries, paramedics said.

Philip Hann, a witness who spoke to CTV News Toronto on Monday, said he was on the road outside the site when he heard someone calling for help.

“You could hear a guy screaming and yelling…He said someone was trapped under the scaffolding,” Hann said. “I just hope everything is okay and he makes it.”

The building where the incident occurred was being constructed by Minto Communities and in a statement issued on Monday afternoon, the company said it is “fully cooperating” with the investigation.

“Authorities responded to an incident involving a trade partner at 19 Glen Agar Drive in Etobicoke at 11:30 a.m. today,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with him and his family.”

The Ministry of Labour is investigating the incident.
