A man in his 20s is dead after a shooting broke out in a residential area of Scarborough in the early hours of Friday.

Gunfire rang out in the area of Warden Avenue and Danforth Road just before 5 a.m.

Upon arrival at the scene, Toronto paramedics said they rushed the male victim to a trauma centre in critical condition, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. They said he sustained injuries to his upper body, specifically to his chest and neck.

He was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital in critical condition but did not survive.

A witness who wished to remain anonymous told CTV News Toronto that they saw a person running away from the scene, heading east toward Mack Avenue, immediately following the gunshots.

Few other details about possible suspects were provided but police did say they’re searching for a silver four-door sedan in connection with the case.

“The suspect was on foot but I believe the suspect arrived in the area with the help of a vehicle and that vehicle had a driver in it,” Det. Andy Singh said.

“The driver might not have known what was about to transpire and we encourage that person to come forward and speak to us because, as it stands right now, they’re equally liable and culpable in terms of this homicide.”

Police believe there were people boarding a TTC bus nearby at around the same time and are asking anyone who was in the area who witnessed or heard anything to contact them.

Roads were blocked off in the area for part of the afternoon while police combed through the scene for evidence. The area has since reopened to traffic.

This is Toronto’s 71st homicide for 2018.
