York Regional Police say a Scarborough woman who has been missing for almost a week told the last known person to see her in Markham that she was “starting on a journey.”

Taneesha Brown, 25, was walking near Bur Oak Secondary School, at Bur Oak Avenue and Dogwood Street, at 10:48 p.m. on Jan. 12.

She was spotted on video – taken from a surveillance camera at the school -- approaching a man exiting the school. The man told police she asked him how he was doing. The man asked Brown if she was alright, as she was not wearing clothing warm enough for the weather.

Brown told the witness that she was fine, and that she was “starting on a journey,” the witness told police. Brown then walked south towards the school’s soccer fields.

Brown was visiting relatives at a residence located near McCowan Road and Castlemore Avenue on Jan. 12 when she told them she was stepping out to get some fresh air at 10:30 p.m., and never returned.

She has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and her family is extremely concerned about her wellbeing.

Her father, Uriel Brown, previously told CP24 that he introduced his daughter to the teachings of the Nation of Islam, a Muslim sect originating in the Midwestern U.S. in the 1930s. He said he fears Taneesha is not able to interpret religious teachings properly, not being able to tell the difference between reality and the religious texts.

Police have used remote-controlled water vehicles to search ponds, as well as a helicopter to search for Brown.

Investigators have also canvassed all major mosques in York Region and found no leads.

Brown is described as a black female, standing five-feet-five inches tall, weighing approximately 122 pounds. She has shoulder-length black hair with pink highlights.

She was last seen wearing a white knee-length West African tunic known as a dashiki, white pants and a white hijab. She was also seen carrying a black purse.

Anyone who has information about her whereabouts is asked to call York Regional Police at 866-876-5423 ext. 7541 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
