A victim in a fatal hit-and-run in Richmond Hill was struck by two other vehicles while he lay motionless on the ground, according to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.

The third vehicle to hit the man was a police cruiser.

The SIU told reporters Thursday afternoon that police were initially called to the scene after a man reported striking a person who lay motionless on Yonge Street near Silver Maple Road, at about 3:30 a.m.

Some time later, a York Regional Police cruiser responding to the call also came into contact with the man.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

“These incidents weren’t sequential. These were separate incidents in that the man was struck and later struck again and then the cruiser came into contact with this male,” said SIU investigator Jon Ansell. “The cruiser was the last vehicle to contact the male. “

The man, who police say was 30-years-old, is not being identified pending notification of next-of-kin.

Wanted vehicle

At the scene, York Regional Police officers found debris from a vehicle, leading them to believe a 2006 to 2010 Mercedes-Benz R-Class was involved in the collision and then left the scene.

The vehicle is silver in colour and has damage to its front end, according to police.

"Right now York Regional Police are appealing to anyone who has information on a vehicle matching that description with damage to come forward," Const. Andy Pattenden said during a joint news conference with the SIU.

It is not clear whether the man was already dead when he was struck by police and as such the case is being jointly investigated by the SIU and York Regional Police.

According to its mandate, the SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death or serious injury.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call investigators at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7704 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.

The man was one of two pedestrians to be killed in collisions in the GTA on Thursday morning.

In the other incident, a 33-year-old woman died when she was struck by two vehicles while crossing Lawrence Avenue West, near Dufferin Street, in Toronto.
