Toronto police are on the hunt for at least one suspect after a male was shot in the leg near Jane Street and Finch Avenue West on Wednesday evening, the latest in a wave of incidents that has put gun violence and public safety under scrutiny.

Police told CP24 they were initially called at 6:45 p.m. about a person who was armed with a gun, and a short time later received a report of a gunshot being fired.

When police arrived in the 2900 block of Jane Street, they found the male victim, who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

The victim’s injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

He was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Police did not reveal any information about the victim, and they have not released a description of the suspect or suspects.

Toronto a safe city, police and politicians say

The debate about gun violence and public safety has erupted in recent weeks following high-profile shootings at Eaton Centre and in Little Italy.

Public leaders and police have been put on the hot seat, but they continue to reassure people Toronto is a safe city, despite a string of shootings in very public places.

Last weekend, a man was shot and wounded at a townhouse complex near Woodbine Beach as a Canada Day fireworks display wrapped up, and a toddler was wounded in North York when a stray bullet grazed her leg as she sat in a parked vehicle.

According to figures posted on Toronto Police Service’s website, officers have received reports of 131 shootings so far in 2012, compared with 101 during the same period in 2011, 107 in 2010 and 123 in 2009.

Fifteen people have been fatally shot and 58 have been wounded this year. At this time last year, 14 people had been shot to death, while 49 others had been wounded.
