Police say they are looking into all possibilities as they investigate a tragic accident that claimed the life of a seven-year-old girl in Leaside Wednesday afternoon.

Georgia Walsh was struck by a westbound van that had just made a right hand turn as she crossed Millwood Road at McRae Drive shortly after 4 p.m. Walsh was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

According to a source, Walsh is the daughter of Conservative Party of Canada President John Walsh.

In a statement released late Wednesday night, the Walsh family asked for privacy as they come to terms with the “incredible loss” of a “beautiful daughter.”

“We are looking at all possibilities as to what exactly caused this accident,” Const. Clint Stibbe told CP24 Thursday morning. “Right now we just don’t have all the facts in, but there is the same amount of scrutiny being put into this investigation as there would be into a homicide investigation, so we are looking to see what exactly happened, what the chain of events were and make a determination about what, if an, fault needs to be assessed on either individual.”

Residents express concern about speed of drivers

In the wake of the accident, residents in the community have been expressing concern about the speed of vehicles in the area with some calling on the city to look at installing speed bumps to prevent tragedy from repeating itself.

Don Valley West Coun. John Parker has also voiced his concerns, telling CP24 Thursday that the intersection where the accident occurred has increasingly become a “commuter route” with drivers using it as a shortcut connecting Leaside with North Toronto.

Stibbe, however, told CP24 that it remains too early to speculate on whether speed had any role to play.

“Speed is generally one of the largest complaints we have throughout the city and typically with speed comes injury and in some cases death, however in this case I can’t yet say if it was a factor,” he said.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact police at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416- 222-TIPS (8477).
