Students at Toronto's public elementary schools will not be getting their final marks at the end of the school year but instead will receive a letter informing them if they will be moving on to the next grade.

The Toronto District School Board confirmed Thursday morning that students within the board will be getting placement letters instead of report cards later this month.

"The production of report cards for more than 170,000 TDSB students requires the electronic inputting of data by teachers. As elementary teachers are currently taking part in a province-wide strike action which includes not recording student marks electronically for the purpose of producing report cards, it is not possible to issue these reports while maintaining the privacy and accuracy of student’s marks," the TDSB said in a news release.

The letters will be sent out during the week of June 22.

"This letter will take the place of the regular report card and will be kept in their Ontario Student Record," the TDSB added.

On Wednesday, the York and Peel district school boards confirmed that they too would be sending out placement letters.

Elementary school teachers across Ontario began job action on May 11 and as part of their work-to-rule campaign, the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario says that teachers are not participating in Ministry of Education meetings, workshops or meetings with principals.

Teachers are also not administering standardized tests or booking field trips for the 2015-2016 school year.
