A torso found stuffed inside a suitcase in Lake Ontario Wednesday belongs to a dismembered Scarborough woman, Toronto police confirm.

Parts of Hua Guang Liu's body were found in Mississauga and Scarborough last month, but until now her torso had not been located.

Following an autopsy on Thursday, Toronto police confirmed that the remains found by two boaters about 2.5 kilometres off Bluffer's Park on Wednesday morning belonged to Liu.

Liu's former boyfriend is charged with second-degree murder in what police say was a domestic-related homicide. Investigators are still trying to determine how and where Liu died.

“If it is indeed Ms. Liu there could be signs of a cause of death, there could be many things that could be learned,” Toronto police Const. Erin Cooper told CP24 earlier Thursday.

Niagara police suspend search after torso found

Meanwhile, Niagara Regional Police have suspended their ground and water search for additional evidence after a woman’s torso was found in the Niagara River on Aug. 29.

The victim has not been identified and no one has been charged in her death, which is being treated as a homicide.

According to an autopsy report, the woman is white and 31 to 55 years old, and she had a pierced belly button and scars from two caesarean sections, police said previously.

In an effort to identify the woman, police are asking people to contact female family members who they have not heard from recently, co-workers who have not shown up for work, and neighbours who have been absent. Investigators have been poring over reports of missing women.

Anyone with information is asked to call Niagara Regional Police Service's major crime unit at 905-688-4111 ext. 4200 or its tips line at ext. 4468.
