Prime Minister Stephen Harper's gamble in calling an election this fall may pay off for his party.

A new CTV-Globe and Mail poll suggests a majority government is within reach for the Harper Conservatives.

According to the Strategic Counsel of Canada, 37 per cent of respondents would vote for the Tories if an election is called.

The Liberals are at 29 per cent followed by the NDP at 17 -- the Green Party at 9 --and the Bloc Quebecois in last place with 8 per cent.

Support has increased significantly for the Conservatives. Just a few months ago the Tories and Liberal parties were neck in neck in terms of popularity.

Meanwhile, the Liberals are holding a three day caucus session in Winnipeg in order to plot strategy.

Harper has met with opposition leaders over the past week, meetings which were intended to discuss the fall session, but left Liberal leader Stephane Dion with "no doubt" that there will be an election call soon.

Dion said after his meeting Monday afternoon that Harper wants Canadians to go to the polls early so we won't see how unprepared his government is for a fall session.

Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe and the NDP's Jack Layton also said that their meetings with the Prime Minister showed he's made up his mind to hold an election.

Top officials in the Prime Minister's Office say they are expecting an Oct. 14 vote.
