TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays selected the contract of outfielder Ezequiel Carrera from triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old Venezuelan batted .279 with three home runs and 21 RBIs in 70 games for the Blue Jays earlier this season. In 246 career big-league games for Toronto, Detroit, Philadelphia and Cleveland, Carrera has a .259 average with five home runs and 49 RBIs.

The Blue Jays entered Tuesday night's game at Philadelphia with a three-game lead on Baltimore in the race for the first wild-card spot in the American League. Toronto was also one game behind the first-place New York Yankees in the East Division standings.
