A storm that blew through the Greater Toronto Area on Saturday morning is being blamed for causing damage throughout the region - including knocking down nearly 30 hydro poles across a Mississauga intersection.

The storm's high winds knocked down between 22 and 30 poles at their bases, including at least one concrete pole, at Cawthra Road and Atwater Avenue.

At least one fell on top of a car that was on the road at the time. Its driver escaped with minor injuries, although the front end of the car was completely smashed.

Another driver was in a car that was covered by power lines when the poles fell. She required assistance to exit her car safely but was not injured.

Area residents say the domino effect caused by the falling hydro poles began after a large oak tree down the street snapped during the storm. The owners of the land where the tree stood had called the city earlier this week to request assistance with the aging oak.

Residents of the area are without power, something that could continue for up to a week. A wedding scheduled for Saturday afternoon at church directly beside the poles' wreckage continued without power.

Damage elsewhere in the city included several downed trees in Mississauga, Port Credit and Etobicoke. Some were snapped in two, while others were uprooted -- leaving cars and houses damaged.
