The Toronto Catholic District School Board has suspended a teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student.

The teacher, who was charged Wednesday with one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference, taught at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School near Lawrence Avenue and Weston Road. He stands accused of assaulting a student at the school during the 2010-2011 school year

On Thursday the Toronto Catholic District School Board issued a release responding to the allegations.

"The safety of our students and staff is always a priority within the TCDSB. We have communicated with the staff at our school and have mailed a letter home to parents within the school community. Counselling is available to the families and staff and we will continue to provide support after the school year begins," the release read.

Orlando Fusaro, 37, is suspended pending an investigation, as is TCDSB policy. The allegations against him have not been proven in court.
