TORONTO - The founders of a Canadian record store chain are pitching in $2 million to help fight the famine devastating East Africa.

Kroum and Eva Pindoff say they made the donation after seeing pictures of people affected by the deadly drought cycles.

The couple founded Music World in 1970. Music World went bankrupt shortly after the couple sold it in 2007.

The donation is going to the Canadian Red Cross as it works to channel aid to the estimated 11 million people at risk of starvation from the disaster. The charity says children under five and pregnant mothers face the greatest risk of death and acute malnutrition.

So far the Canadian arm of the charity has donated $1 million to Kenya and Somalia, though it says more will be needed to help the countries recover from the famine.

The Canadian government will match any famine relief donation of up to $100,000.
