Toronto FC acquired defender Richard Eckersley on loan from Burnley of England's Npower Championship division on Friday.

"Richard is a good player, he comes from Manchester United's youth program," said Toronto FC head coach and technical director Aron Winter. "We are rebuilding our defence and the season is very long so we're happy to add another right back."

Eckersley played for Toronto FC director of player development Paul Mariner at Plymouth Argyle, when Mariner served as the club's manager.

"Paul knows Richard very well and I am convinced he can fit into our system," Winter said in a statement.

Eckersley, 22, began his youth career at Manchester United and made two appearances with the senior side.

He was also part of Manchester United's Carling Cup final victory over Tottenham in March 2009. Eckersley signed a four-year contract with Burnley in July 2009 and has been a part of loan deals at Plymouth Argyle, Bradford City, and most recently with Bury.

Toronto FC (1-1-3) is home to D.C. United on Saturday night.
