A 58-year-old Scarborough woman was killed on Wednesday morning when she was hit by a transport truck full of recyclables while crossing the street.

The woman and her 14-year-old daughter had been walking northbound across Steeles Avenue at Pine Valley Drive at about 7 a.m.

The driver of the truck was turning left on a green light and struck the pair before pulling over about 15 metres east of the intersection. The teen was not injured but her mother was pronounced dead at the scene after failing to respond to CPR.

Police have not released their names.

Police say the driver was turning eastbound from the southbound lanes and didn't see the women crossing.

The truck had come from Hillsburgh, about 20 kilometres south of Orangeville, with a load of recyclables.

At the time of the crash it was misty, raining and dark outside due to an extra hour of darkness in the morning brought on by the shift to daylight savings time.

The shift means more pedestrians are out in the dark morning hours, and several have been hit in Toronto this week.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash to call Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.
