TDSB trustees elect Shaun Chen as new chair

The Toronto District School Board has a new leader.

Scarborough-Rouge River trustee Shaun Chen was elected to the board’s top position in a secret ballot vote held Monday night.

The vote was held as part of the board’s first meeting since October’s municipal election.

Chen, who previously held the position of vice chair, has also served as director of the Ontario Public School Boards' Association and as a member of the City of Toronto Children's Services Advisory Committee.

“I want to thank my fellow trustees for their support as we begin a new chapter at the TDSB,” Chen said in a statement released by the board following Monday night’s meeting.

“During my term, I will work hard, together with my colleagues, to restore trust and integrity to the board and ensure transparency in everything we do.”

Chen has represented Ward 21 since 2006.

Sheila Cary-Meagher, trustee for Ward 16 Beaches-East York, was named vice chair.

Monday night's vote follows news last month that Education Minister Liz Sandals would appoint an outside expert to conduct a review of the troubled school board.
