Peel police say a man pronounced dead after a single-vehicle crash in Mississauga on Monday morning was shot shortly before the collision.
Police were called to the area of Dixie Road, south of Derry Road East, at around 1:45 a.m. for reports of a crash in the area.
They arrived to find the driver suffering from “significant injuries,” Const. Richard Chin told reporters on Monday.
The man was rushed to hospital in critical condition but died of his injuries.
Police later confirmed that Peel Regional Police’s homicide unit has taken carriage of the investigation.
Shortly before the collision, Chin said, the victim had been in an industrial area near Midway Boulevard and Invader Crescent.
“There was some sort of altercation where he was shot,” Chin said at a news conference. “He attempted to flee the area and consequently ended up crashing,”
Chin said there is “limited” information that can be released at this time but confirmed that investigators have located the scene of the shooting.
Police have not released any information on possible suspects.
