A man and a child have sustained life-threatening injuries in a two-vehicle collision in Pickering, police say.

Durham Regional Police said they were called to the intersection of Taunton and Brock roads at 8 p.m.

Sgt. Joanne Bortoluss told CP24 that the man and child were outside their vehicle when they were struck by another vehicle.

The child was taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre while the man was transported to a local area hospital.

Bortoluss said the driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene. The cause of the collision is unknown.

Police have closed the intersection for investigation.
