Don’t call 911 for strange cats in your front yard, Waterloo Regional Police warn

Published:

Waterloo Regional Police are used to getting unusual reports, but one really stood out in 2025.

They shared a portion of that 911 recording on Wednesday.

“There’s an unknown pet in front of my house,” the caller said.

“There’s an unknown what?” the 911 operator asked.

“Unknown pet,” the caller replied. “Unknown cat.”

“There’s a cat in front of your house?” the operator repeated. Then, to determine the exact emergency, she asked: “Just to confirm… this is a regular cat and not a lion or a tiger or something?”

“Yeah, this is a regular cat,” the caller answered.

WRPS share 911 call about mystery cat Waterloo Regional Police are asking the public not to call 911 for non-emergencies, such as this report about a unknown cat in someone's front yard.

Waterloo Regional Police are once again reminding the public that 911 calls are for emergencies only and, as the operator told the caller about the mystery cat: “That is not something that you would need to call 911 for.”

Incidents that do not require an emergency response can be reported to 519-570-9777.

The question of whether a cat you do not recognize is worthy of any type of police response is debatable.
