A seven-year-old boy who went missing on Canada Day in a Hamilton conservation area has died.
The child, identified by police as Nathanael Selambi, disappeared Wednesday afternoon at the Binbrook Conservation Area, located at 5050 Harrison Rd., at about 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
Dive teams that were part of Peel Regional Police’s Underwater Search and Recovery Unit located the boy’s shortly after 1:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
The investigation into the death is being led by the Hamilton Police Service in conjunction with the Coroner’s Office.
Hamilton police say they do not suspect foul play in the death and are not treating it as suspicious, according to a statement sent to CTV News.
“Our thoughts are with Nathanael’s family, loved ones and everyone affected by this tragic loss,” a Hamilton Police Service spokesperson said.
“Hamilton Police thank the public, community partners and emergency responders for their assistance and support throughout the search.”
In a statement, Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath said she is “heartbroken to learn that 7-year-old Nathanael Selambi has been found deceased.”
“My thoughts are with Nathanael’s family, loved ones, classmates, and all those grieving this unimaginable loss. Thank you to the Hamilton Police Service, emergency responders, community partners, volunteers, and everyone who supported the search during this incredibly difficult time for Nathanael’s family and our community.”
