A storm that rocked Simcoe County in the late afternoon hours of Canada Day proved deadly for one man.
South Simcoe Police say a call came in around 5:10 p.m. on July 1 of a male who had been out paddleboarding on Lake Simcoe and was believed to be in distress near the Mapleview Drive area of Innisfil.
Police say as heavy rains and strong winds picked up, the man became stranded out on the water and was unable to return to shore.
Shortly after 5:30 p.m., marine units from South Simcoe police and York Regional police began searching the water.
Initially, police found the paddleboard but not the man, however, they pressed on with the search.
Around 8 p.m. the body of the 38-year-old man was located by a York Regional police helicopter.
Officers determined the man was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
An investigation into the exact cause of death remains ongoing.
Police say the identity of the deceased will not be released to the public.
