An Oshawa man has been charged after police say an elderly woman lost more than $400,000 in an alleged fraud scheme.

Durham Regional Police say that on Oct. 7, 2023, officers responded to a residence near Windsor Avenue and Elm Street in Ajax for a wellness check after concerns were raised about the welfare of an elderly woman who may have been the victim of elder abuse.

Police said they then launched a lengthy investigation into allegations of fraud and theft, and determined the woman had lost more than $400,000.

On Sept. 29, police arrested Christos Charalambous.

He was charged with theft over $5,000, fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. The charges have not been tested in court.

Police say they are concerned there may be additional victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact Durham Regional Police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
