A woman is facing charges after nearly 100 dogs were seized from a home in Fort McMurray earlier this year.

On Aug. 25, Wood Buffalo RCMP along with Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Bylaw Services, executed a welfare check, followed by a search warrant, at a home in the Gregoire neighbourhood in Fort McMurray.

Ninety-seven dogs were removed from the home.

A spokesperson from the Fort McMurray Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said a 98th dog was rescued from the area days later.

“I’m happy to report that 61 of the...dogs have found loving homes after receiving their required spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations and necessary grooming,” Melanie Schneider said on Thursday.

Twenty-five dogs are awaiting surgeries while three are in foster care for medical reasons.

“The dogs are making progress, and our team has been working hard to help them build confidence, learn to trust people, and discover that the world can be a safe and positive place,” she added.

She credited SPCA volunteers for stepping up to build extra kennels and going “above and beyond” to meet the increased demands brought on by the rescue.

“Fort McMurray continues to show up for its animals through financial donations, supply drives, volunteer support and simply checking in to ask what we need.”

On Wednesday, a 51-year-old Fort McMurray woman was arrested and charged with causing damage or injury to an animal and causing or permitting unnecessary pain, suffering, or injury to an animal.

The woman has been released from custody and will appear in court on Nov. 19.
