Niagara police are looking for a suspect after they say a man attempted to abduct a five-year-old boy from a Zellers store while he was shopping with his parents.

Police say the family was shopping for Christmas presents at a Zellers in Seaway Mall in Welland around 2:30 p.m. Sunday when the mother felt tugging on her son’s grasp. She turned around to find a man pulling on the boy’s other hand.

The man took off after the boy’s mother started yelling at him. The boy’s father managed to tackle the man and turn him over to store staff, who led him out to the parking lot.

But he escaped, taking off on foot toward Woodlawn Road.

The suspect is described as a white male standing six feet and weighing approximately 220 pounds with short brown hair. He is clean shaven with a larger nose. When last spotted, he was wearing a light brown camouflage baseball hat, a blue shirt with the word “Tommy” across the chest, a green fleece jacket and blue jeans.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Niagara police or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
