TORONTO -- At least 10 people lost their lives in Ontario during the long Canada Day weekend -- one due to a shooting and the others due to apparent accidents.
In Mississauga, a 25-year-old Toronto man identified as Dennis Alexander was shot early Sunday during a large gathering and later died in hospital.
On the roads, a young woman was killed and two others were sent to hospital Monday evening after their car rolled over on Highway 11 around Burk's Falls, in Ontario's cottage country west of Algonquin Park.
"The vehicle was totally destroyed," said Ontario Provincial Police Const. Carsten Theiling who attended the scene.
Sara Nicole Girard, a 17-year-old from Stouffville, Ont., was declared dead on the scene.
Allison Neville, 17, of Markham, and Megham Timewell, 18, of Stoufville were taken to Toronto's Sunnybrook hospital.
After blocking traffic on Highway 11 between 6 p.m. Monday and 2 a.m. Tuesday, Police were still investigating the causes of the accident.
A 29-year-old Guelph man who was injured when his car rolled over southwest of Owen Sound early Sunday later died in hospital.
Police said Andrew Blewett's passenger, a 22-year-old woman, was injured in the crash but is expected to survive.
Motorcycle crashes claimed two lives during the weekend.
Brent England, 49, of Mississauga, died when his motorcycle crashed with a pickup truck in Caledon.
A man in his 20s, also riding a motorcycle, died in a separate crash in Richmond Hill.
Drownings claimed at least six lives in Ontario during the long weekend.
Police divers recovered the body of a man who drowned in a Peterborough lake on Sunday. Charles Urqhart, 30, of Oshawa, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two men aged 20 and 26 are believed to have drowned in the Ottawa River.
Police found the body of the 20-year-old in Ottawa's west end Monday morning. The second body was located early Tuesday afternoon.
The two men went to the river Saturday night but reportedly ran into trouble in the water. Police won't release their names at the request of the families.
A 27-year-old Toronto man drowned in the Welland River in Niagara Falls. Police were called Sunday evening after passersby saw the man struggling in the water.
Police said the unidentified victim was in Niagara Falls for Canada Day celebrations.
Another man, also 27, drowned in Lake Huron at Grand Bend on Sunday after reportedly disappearing under the water off the main beach. He was pronounced dead in hospital.
The body of a 79-year-old man was pulled out of Lake Huron in Saugeen Shores on Saturday. The coroner's office concluded Ronald Boardman of Southampton, suffered a heart problem while swimming.
