BELLEVILLE, Ont. -- Belleville has sent out a call for volunteers to help fill sandbags as the city east of Toronto fears local rivers may overflow.
The municipality is already under a state of emergency and authorities are closely monitoring the weather forecast for rainfall that could send large stretches of rivers spilling over their banks.
Homes in low-lying areas are at the greatest flood risk.
The Quinte Conservation authority says one river peaked Friday night and two others were slowly rising, while one local lake rose 12 cm in 24 hours.
The city says that if heavy rain moves in this weekend there could be flooding at levels even more than 2008, when there was the worst flood problem in recent years.
The call is out for volunteers, who are being asked to bring work gloves and rubber boots as they'll be helping build sandbag walls in crucial areas.
