Halifax Walmart where employee died reopens more than three months later

A Halifax Walmart where an employee was found dead last year has reopened.

A Walmart store in Halifax where an employee was found dead inside an oven last year has reopened.

Halifax Regional Police responded to a sudden death at the Walmart on Mumford Road on Oct. 19, 2024.

A 19-year-old female employee was found dead inside a large walk-in oven in the bakery department.

The Maritime Sikh Society identified the victim as Gursimran Kaur.

On Nov. 18, police said her death is not believed to be suspicious, and there is no evidence of foul play.

Police did not release any additional information.

At the time, Walmart said the store was closed for renovation work that was underway at the time of the death.

The Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration issued a stop-work order for the bakery and the oven after the incident, which was lifted on Oct. 28.

The department said the oven was “assessed and determined to have been operating as per the manufacturer’s requirements.”

Amanda Moss, a spokesperson for Walmart Canada, previously told CTV News the oven would be removed from the store, but that “removing the oven had always been part of the standard remodel program” the company is implementing across the country.

The labour department assumed the lead in the workplace investigation after police ruled out criminality.

The department says the investigation remains ongoing.
