Thousands of Hydro-Quebec customers are without power Thursday evening as strong wind gusts and rain showers start to sweep into parts of southern Quebec, including in the Montreal area.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m., the power utility was reporting that approximately 70,000 customers had no electricity.

By around 10:30 p.m., there were still more than 50,000 people affected.

The hardest hit areas are the Lanaudière (25,000), the Laurentians (17,000), and the Montérégie (9,000) regions. In Montreal, nearly 4,000 customers were in the dark.

Paramedics say a woman in her 20s was struck by a large branch that fell on top of her during the storm. She was sent to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

No other serious injures were reported, according to Montreal police and Urgences-Sante.
