RCMP in Island Lake say a small aircraft crashed in northern Manitoba, leaving four people dead and one seriously injured.

Approximately 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, Mounties in Island Lake received a report of a plane crash. The report said the crash happened approximately 40 kilometres south of St. Theresa Point First Nation, near Makepeace Lake. In a media release, RCMP said the flight departed from St. Theresa Point First Nation and was heading to Makepeace Lake.

Police were given the coordinates of the crash site and took a helicopter to the scene. Search and Rescue crew from the CFB Trenton in Ontario was contacted and deployed an aircraft with two crew members dropping on site for medical assistance.

At the scene, Mounties confirmed the 20-year-old male pilot suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Two male passengers of 53 and 49 years old, and two 50-year-old female passengers – all from St. Theresa Point First Nation – were pronounced deceased on scene.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada was notified and have deployed to the crash site. The investigation is ongoing.
