Police search for inmate who escaped federal prison in Prince Albert

Police have issued a warrant for an inmate who escaped the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert Saturday evening.

According to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), staff discovered 28-year-old Donald Buchanan was missing during the facility’s 9:30 p.m. count.

CSC says it contacted the Prince Albert Police Service and the Prince Albert RCMP, and a warrant for his arrest has been issued.

The inmate is described as six feet, two inches tall, and weighs 166 pounds. He has a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He also has multiple tattoos, including a Koi fish tattoo on his right arm, a Trans Canada tattoo on his right wrist, a cross with a razor blade tattoo on his right upper arm, and YXE, a plane and a cartoon figure on his right hand.

“The inmate is currently serving a sentence of two years for Possession of schedule I/II substance for the purpose of trafficking, Possession of property obtained by crime – over $5000, Possession of weapon contrary to prohibition order, and Possession of prohibited weapon knowing it is unauthorized,” CSC said.

CSC says it is investigating the circumstances of the escape and working with the police to locate Buchanan as quickly as possible.

Authorities have provided the police with all available information to help with the arrest.
