Five GTA suspects arrested in Orillia after bound and injured man found in abandoned building: OPP

There was a heavy police presence in the downtown area of Orillia as the OPP was responding to an ‘active’ incident.

Five people face charges following a police investigation in Orillia over the weekend after reports of suspicious activity involving masked suspects near an abandoned building.

Provincial police say officers were called to Colborne Street East shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday, and arrived to find a U-Haul van parked in front of the building. Police say officers found a man inside who was bound and suffering what they described as serious injuries.

He was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment, no further information was disclosed regarding his condition or identity.

The situation led to a massive police investigation that included members of the OPP’s Emergency Response Team, Tactical Rescue and K9 units, aviation services and the Orillia Crime Unit.

Police say the efforts led to the arrests of five suspects who were found inside the abandoned building. A Woodbridge man, 62, a Toronto man, 51, and three Brampton residents, ages 30, 31, and 41, each face charges of kidnapping, forcible confinement and breaking and entering.

OPP did not disclose whether the suspects and the man found bound and injured knew each other. No further details on the case were provided.

Police say there is no threat to public safety at this time and the investigation remains ongoing.
