Waterloo Regional Police said a woman has been charged after an alleged apple theft at a Woolwich Township orchard.
Police said they were called to Shuh Orchards on Line 86 around 5:25 p.m. on Sunday after the owner reported seeing a woman transferring apples from a designated picking bag into the trunk of a vehicle.
The apples were later weighed and found to exceed the paid amount by about 39 pounds.
Officers identified and arrested the woman a few hours later. A 39-year-old from Guelph has been charged with theft under $5,000. She was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court in October.
The incident comes just one week after the orchard announced new rules for visitors, citing theft concerns.
Shuh Orchards reported that approximately 500 pounds of apples had been stolen from their farm since the beginning of the apple-picking season, prompting the business to tighten security and policies for pick-your-own customers.
