Fall storm brings heavy snow, rain to northern Manitoba

It was a stormy Thanksgiving for parts of central and northern Manitoba, with one community receiving as much as 20 centimetres of snow.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the storm began overnight on Saturday and continued to spread northeast across the province. The weather event moved its way out of the province late Monday, into early Tuesday morning.

The weather agency said when the storm first came in, it started out as rain but then transitioned to snow.

Snowfall totals include 20 cm in Thompson, 12 cm in Flin Flon and 10 cm in Durban.

In terms of precipitation totals, which could be both rain and snowfall melt, ECCC reports 67.5 millimetres in The Pas, 52.4 mm in Swan River, 61.4 mm in Westray and 48.6 mm in Grand Rapids.

ECCC is also reporting that some communities saw heavy wind gusts on Sunday and Monday, including Minnedosa with winds up to 87 kilometres per hour — and Brandon, Austin, Manitou and Deerwood, which all saw winds as strong as 85 km/h.
