A shiny red Honda Civic Hybrid is making headlines this week in Alliston, Ont., as the 11 millionth vehicle to roll off the assembly line at Honda Canada’s manufacturing plant.

“A great sense of pride knowing I was a part of that,” said line worker Kevin O’Brien.

The milestone serves as a reminder of the company’s nearly four-decade presence in the region.

“Alliston, the Town of New Tecumseth and the County of Simcoe are all really critical to us,” said Bobbi Curran, vice president with Honda Canada Mfg. “They have been an amazing community partner. Next year we are going to celebrate 40 years, so that is going to be another major milestone for us.”

Honda says 69 per cent of all its vehicles sold in Canada are made in Alliston.

“As Canada’s second-largest auto manufacturer, Honda has consistently maintained its manufacturing operations since 1986. We remain committed to Canada and its robust manufacturing ecosystem, with Ontario’s business-friendly environment continuing to foster our growth and innovation,” stated Dave Jamieson, president and CEO of Honda Canada.

Honda says the Alliston plant employs 4,200 associates, and has the capacity to produce more than 400,000 vehicles annually.

“The economic impact extends beyond HCM, with an estimated 30,000 additional spin-off jobs supported across the sector,” the company added.
