Calgary mayoral candidate’s campaign stunt goes awry

A drone show above McMahon Stadium on Saturday began with a cheer for the home team but soon turned into a message promoting a Calgary mayoral candidate.

A campaign stunt by one of Calgary’s mayoral candidates at McMahon Stadium over the weekend may have gotten fans going for the game, but there was a different result when the crowd learned the full message.

Ahead of the Calgary Stampeders home match against the Toronto Argonauts, Jeff Davison told fans to keep their eyes on the skies for a special message to Calgarians.

“People are the heartbeat of political campaigns. And that includes each and every one of you,” his campaign wrote in a statement Saturday evening.

“From all of us on Team Davison to all of you, thank you for everything you do for Calgary.”

That message came in the form of a drone show above McMahon Stadium.

Fans appeared to be getting into the show until they realized the message was politically motivated, which then brought on boos and laughter.

Polls open on election day at 10 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
