Police are seeking witnesses after an 18-year-old was killed in a fiery crash near Nanaimo, B.C., Sunday night.

The collision occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Highway 1 near Morden Road, the BC Highway Patrol said in a statement Monday.

According to police, a 19-year-old Nanaimo man was driving a black Audi S3 sedan when it crashed and burst into flames on the highway’s northbound lanes.

The driver was sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while his passenger, an 18-year-old man also from Nanaimo, died at the scene.

Police are seeking witnesses who saw or have information on a second, dark-coloured car that was reported to be in the area during the time of the collision but did not stop.

“We need to know more about that second dark car, possibly a black Honda Civic, that was driving in close proximity to the black Audi in the moments before it crashed,” says Cpl. Michael McLaughlin in the statement.

“Dash-camera video and witnesses will be key to learning exactly what caused this collision.”

Anyone who believes they have relevant information or video is asked to contact BC Highway Patrol, Duncan branch, at 250-746-2751 and quote file number 7001-2025-2168.
