There were no tricks for a Winnipeg woman who made a surprising discovery in her children’s bag of Halloween treats — a gold wedding ring.
Simone Hildebrand-Thiessen said it happened after a full night of trick-or-treating with her kids in North Kildonan.
“On Saturday morning, we were sorting the candy, dumped it all out on the living room floor, and I saw this wedding ring sitting in the midst,” she told CTV News.
“I was just shocked.”
At first, she thought it was a toy, but as soon as she picked it up, Hildebrand-Thiessen said she could tell it was real.
“It’s got that heavy weight of gold,” she said.
Her next thought — how on earth would she return the ring to its rightful owner?
Hildebrand-Thiessen decided to make a post in her neighbourhood Facebook group. She was careful not to give away too many details, but she noted a ring was found and asked anyone who may have lost theirs to message her.
“The post blew up much more than I expected,” she said.
Within hours, Hildebrand-Thiessen said someone messaged her saying they believed the ring belonged to their brother, who lost it the night before while handing out candy.
After exchanging some details, she said they were able to get the ring back — with her husband and daughter delivering it to the grateful owner on Sunday.
“I was really sort of heartened and happy to see that the community responded so positively,” she said. “I think this really felt like a basic thing to do. You know, we do the good that’s in front of us and we do the best to help the people in our neighbourhood.
“So I’m really happy that we could do that.”
