A Whitecourt business owner who has deep roots in Calgary is now $36 million richer. He was presented with the cheque on Tuesday.

We now know the identity of the Albertan who won $36 million on a Lotto 6-49 draw.

The Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) unveiled the winner at an event in Calgary on Tuesday, saying Stacey Boyce — who was born and raised in Calgary — specifically requested to celebrate his win in his hometown near family and friends.

Boyce won the gold ball jackpot on the Oct. 15 Lotto 6-49.

He owns a logging company near Hinton, Alta., and spends most of his time in the wilderness with his team, taking weekly trips into Hinton to pick up propane and supplies for his camp — and buy some lottery tickets.

It was during one of those weekly trips when Boyce discovered his win.

He says he was so excited, he accidentally left his propane behind when he left.

“At first I thought it said $360,000,” he said.

It wasn’t until Boyce returned to the gas station to pick up his propane that he checked the ticket again and realized he had won much more.

“It’s still pretty hard to believe.”

Boyce says he has no firm plans for his win just yet, but might purchase a boat.

He says he may also use the money to expand his business a bit.

“I don’t think it’s quite set in yet,” he admitted.
