Hockey night in Weyburn took an unexpected turn when the arena’s Zamboni caught fire mid-game.

As hockey season heats up, city officials in Weyburn, Sask. dealt with an unusual situation over the weekend.

The City of Weyburn said in an online update Monday that a Zamboni used in its main arena complex, which includes the Whitecap Resources Centre and the Tom Zandee Sports Arena, caught fire on Sunday.

It happened during a U15 hockey game.

“Due to the quick response of our trained rink staff and the Weyburn Fire Department, the fire was contained, both rinks were safely evacuated, and activities resumed after a short delay,” the update said. “We would also like to thank U15 teams, fans, and patrons for calmly following evacuation instructions and giving staff the time needed to assess and address the issue.”

A local towing company had to be brought in to help move the Zamboni out of the arena.

The city says its outdoor Zamboni will be used in the complex while the other one is inspected and repaired.

Rink activities continued after a short delay.
