Prince Edward Island swore in Bloyce Thompson as it’s third premier this year on Friday.

Bloyce Thompson was sworn in as the 35th premier of Prince Edward Island during a ceremony at Government House in Charlottetown on Friday.

Previous interim premier Rob Lantz resigned Thursday night and officially launched his bid to permanently lead the province’s Progressive Conservative Party.

Lantz’s resignation was required in order to compete for the job.

Under the PC Party’s constitution, an interim leader who wants to run must step down within 10 days of a leadership convention being called.

The vote is scheduled for Feb. 7, 2026, at Charlottetown’s Eastlink Centre.

In the early days of his interim leadership, Lantz said he wouldn’t run for the permanent role. More recently, his public statements have left the door open.

Party president Sydney Gallant said in a statement this is a pivotal moment for the party and they are eager to welcome a leader who will help shape the future of the province.

The province’s 33rd premier, Dennis King, resigned in February after six years on the job, making Thompson the Island’s third premier this year.

Thompson has served in a number of portfolios since first being elected as MLA for Stanhope-Marshfield in 2019, including deputy premier since 2023.

The province says he will continue to serve as minister of agriculture and minister of justice, public safety, and the province’s attorney general, while serving as premier.

The following ministers will also remain in their portfolios:

  • Darlene Compton, minister of economic development, innovation and trade
  • Ernie Hudson, minister of transportation and infrastructure
  • Cory Deagle, minister of housing, land and communities
  • Mark McLane, minister of health and wellness
  • Jill Burridge, minister of finance
  • Barb Ramsay, minister of social development and seniors
  • Gilles Arsenault, minister of environment, energy and climate action
  • Jenn Redmond, minister of workforce, advanced learning and population
  • Zack Bell, minister of fisheries, tourism, sport and culture
  • Robin Croucher, minister of education and early years

Lantz will continue to serve as the MLA for Charlottetown-Brighton.

“Serving Islanders as Premier is an extraordinary honour,” said Premier Thompson in a provincial news release.

“Our government remains focused on the work ahead—strengthening our province, supporting our communities, and delivering results for the people of Prince Edward Island.”
