If you own a pickup truck, especially a Toyota Tundra, Ontario police are urging you to take a closer look at how and where you park — after a string of overnight incidents.
Provincial police are investigating three separate incidents involving Toyota Tundra pickup trucks in the Town of Orangeville and are asking the public for help identifying those responsible.
According to OPP, the incidents happened in the early morning hours on Tuesday between roughly 1 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Police say they were called after reports of suspicious activity involving multiple Toyota Tundra vehicles.
Investigators say two of the trucks were damaged during attempted thefts. Police report windows were smashed and dashboards were taken apart, which police believe was part of an effort to start and steal the vehicles. In a third incident, police say suspects were seen trying to gain entry to another Toyota Tundra but were unsuccessful.
The OPP says investigators believe the incidents are connected and the suspects were specifically targeting Toyota Tundra pickup trucks. No vehicles were reported stolen in these incidents.
Police describe the suspects as wearing dark clothing, with their hoods pulled up and faces covered. According to the OPP, the suspects are believed to have been travelling in a newer-model black Honda CR-V, though police say no licence plate information or other distinguishing features were obtained.
Provincial police are reminding residents to remain alert, particularly during overnight hours, and to report any suspicious behaviour in their neighbourhoods. They say residents should ensure vehicles are locked and properly secured, and encourage people to use additional theft-prevention measures where possible.
Officers are also asking residents to review dash camera footage, home security video or surveillance recordings that may have captured suspicious activity or the suspect vehicle during the early morning hours of Dec. 16.
The investigation remains ongoing.
