The crime unit with the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police is investigating after the remains of an Ottawa man were discovered in a municipality just east of the city.
The remains of Hakeem Muhikira, 26, were found Dec. 28 at 8 a.m. in Head, Clara and Maria Township, which is located between North Bay and Ottawa and is next to Mattawa.
Police declined to comment Tuesday morning on whether foul play is suspected, how long the man had been dead and exactly where the body was found.
No broader threat
The remains were found on North River Road, north of Cedar Lake, the OPP said in a news release Tuesday.

“Preliminary information suggests that there are no signs of a broader threat,” police said.
“Residents may notice an increased police presence in the area as the investigation continues. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.”
The crime unit investigation is being carried out under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
Help has also been provided by the OPP’s emergency response team, canine unit and Forensic Identification Services.
Anyone with information that may help the investigation is urged to contact the North Bay OPP at 1-888-310-1122. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online.
