Patrick Chilton of Timmins and Moose Factory won $7,720,930 in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation 50/50 draw.

The foundation says December’s grand prize was the largest ever awarded in an Ontario hospital 50/50 draw.

Glenn Craig Thunder Bay Regional Health Foundation CEO Glenn Craig is seen calling Patrick Chilton of Timmins, Ont., on Friday. Chilton won $7.7 million in the foundation's 50/50 draw.

“A father of five boys and a devoted grandfather, Patrick says his incredible win will help him take care of his family for years to come,” the hospital said in a news release Friday.

“Patrick has recently retired from a long career, first as a health-care administrator and more recently heading up an Indigenous-led power authority in northern Ontario, working in places like Moose Factory, Sioux Lookout, James Bay and Timmins.”

Was headed out to breakfast

Chilton said he was just headed out for a late breakfast around 11 a.m. Friday when he got a call from Foundation CEO Glenn Craig.

“Are you kidding me?” he responded when he got the good news.

When asked if he knew how much he had won, Chilton said that the last amount he had seen was just over $6.5 million. In fact, the prize had grown by $1.2 million since then.

“I need to write this down,” he said.

“I can’t believe it. I’ve always supported the foundation and other hospitals. I worked in health care for a long time.”
