The weekend capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the U.S. military has left many travellers in limbo as hundreds of flights in and out of the Caribbean were cancelled during the region’s high travel season.
No flights were permitted to cross over Venezuelan airspace on Saturday, The Associated Press reported, leading to hundreds of cancellations by major U.S. airlines to and from destinations like Cuba, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Aruba.
In addition to cancellations, widespread travel delays were reported over the weekend, and they are expected to continue for flights to and from the Caribbean in the coming days.
Canadian carriers Air Canada, Air Transat and WestJet did not report any major flight disruptions to the Caribbean as of Monday morning. However, Bloomberg News reported on Saturday that WestJet cancelled some weekend flights between Toronto and Aruba “out of an abundance of caution.”
Over the weekend, Air Canada issued a travel advisory for Venezuela and surrounding regions, acknowledging that anyone with plans to travel to the area “may want to make alternate travel arrangements.”
“If you currently have a reservation, Air Canada has implemented a policy that makes it possible for you to make voluntary changes to your itinerary,” the advisory read, if certain booking conditions are met.
